An Interactive Character Study Guide For Christian Tweens and Their Families.
I have a deep desire to see families raise godly children who not only know and understand the Bible, but live it out in their everyday lives, seeking Christ above all things. Equipping parents to do just that is my passion and joy. Those values are what spurred on my desire to write Chasing Adulthood.
Many years ago, when daughter Hannah was about to enter kindergarten, Steve and I decided to homeschool as it provided the ability to teach our kids at their own pace. We also desired to give them a broad knowledge base of learning that was age appropriate. When Hannah was about to turn 13, we looked for a thorough “coming of age” study that would not only provide excellent Bible knowledge but a personal, practical application that would set her, and our other children, on the road to a lifetime of godly character.
Not pleased with the available options, I decided to create my own curriculum which became our Bible class for that year. Two years later when our oldest son, Mitchell, was getting ready to launch into his teens, we did the same for him, tweaking the program to suit his needs and personality. Now, with one married and the other fully launched into adulthood, both kids speak highly of the knowledge they gained through the intensive study and recall with fondness the lessons they learned.
In April 2020, when Covid hit the world, I decided it was time to put pen to paper and get my curriculum into book form. The book includes scripture and biblical figure studies for eleven different character traits, homework, journaling, mentoring, service projects and a biblical “coming of age” ceremony to culminate the learning. Monthly planning pages help parents and kids stay on track and plan the lessons they want to learn. It was important to me, as I wrote these materials, to consider families with children with alternative learning needs. The curriculum needed to be just as effective and impactful, yet not overwhelming to these children. A separate section after each chapter is dedicated to these unique families. Families who walk this journey together can join a private Facebook group to share their stories and encourage one another.

“This book is very well written. The author does a good job of being relatable. She doesn’t talk down to us. I think the mentoring aspect is unique to this book and it is working very well for me. It is really helpful to have another point of view from someone who has more experience.”
~~ Homeschooled young man (age 15)
“There is a lot for me to love about this book. My child and I have a great springboard for important discussions. It has helped me be a good listener and give him an opportunity to share thoughts that might not have been shared without this intentional program. I love that the juxtaposition of both the desired and undesired character traits brings to light the reality of behavior choices. I appreciate that my son is learning to identify people in his life to look to for wisdom, advice, or as a mentor. I love the flexibility and adaptability of the program. I can see how it would work for varying ages, abilities, and learning styles.” ~~ Homeschool Mom
“This curriculum was impactful when I worked through it as a young teen. It helped me understand the core values of Christian womanhood and the importance of striving towards those in my adult life”
~~ Former Homeschooled young lady, age 24
